Re: Results of action caused by passive condition vs Ongoing effect

It is ICE's decision that modification of faced attack resulting from Rank upon Rank is applied as result of action (see CRF entry for Ready to his Will). It allows to assume that the same applies to other cards like Rank upon Rank, Minions Stir, Redoubled Force and so on. Does anybody have the ori...

Re: Smoke Rings and Weigh All Things to a Nicety - targeting?

I can't think of a transporting instance where the player doesn't have choice/control of what is transported, though. This is not the case for drawing and shuffling, and revealing random cards by definition does not allow for control.

Re: Smoke Rings and Weigh All Things to a Nicety - targeting?

The two categories you have noted -- drawing and shuffling -- may have many instances, but are still only two categories. Are there others? I think "revealing cards from (source)" might also qualify.

Re: Smoke Rings and Weigh All Things to a Nicety - targeting?

Yes, though I expect that an inability to avoid drawing the wrong type of card is sufficient to establish an exemption.

Re: Smoke Rings and Weigh All Things to a Nicety - targeting?

Yes; anything that affects a card affects it. "Affect" is used in the rules to indicate that something happens to an entity without necessitating that the entity be targeted or that the effect be an action.

Re: Draft of CoE Digest #201 Q5 - In the Heart of his Realm - Open until September 24th

ICE never bothered to satisfactorily define "Action" other than an activity in the game -- and then went on to say that meeting active conditions and exhausting a play deck are *not* actions. Meeting active conditions and exhausting a play deck are not actions Even though these *actively c...

Re: Draft of CoE Digest #201 Q4 - CoE Issued Erratum Smoke Rings & Weigh all things - Open until September 24th

The White Hand rules use the phrase "target/affect" for good reason. A given action may not target, but still affect a card. It is by rule impossible to target cards in the discard pile/play deck. (See annotation 8 in the previous post.) Smoke/Weigh affect such cards. Rules pertaining to t...

Re: Smoke Rings and Weigh All Things to a Nicety - targeting?

Annotation 8: An action that requires a target is considered to have the active condition that the target be in play when the action is declared and when it is resolved. An action may not be declared if its target is not in play. It is, by rule, impossible to *target* cards in the discard pile with...

Re: Gollum, Stinker, Mathom Lore, Tales of the Hunt - semicolon

That one can go either way. I'm inclined to read it as the condition for the play of the card, as opposed to Gollum/Stinker, where it is instead the active condition of initiating an optional effect.

Re: Gollum, Stinker, Mathom Lore, Tales of the Hunt - semicolon

I read tapping Gollum/Stinker as the active condition for the discard effect.

Re: FW Resource Permanent Events and Orcs/Trolls

Just a note that a resource which targets a company doesn't necessarily target any characters in the company.

Re: Rethinking The Low-HL Company

I actually started looking at the idea of big companies in the context of a FW company hitting all the dark-hold sites in Mordor while just playing generic orcs at every place they visit.

Re: Palantíri - tapping to use and ability to use them

That's one that tripped me up for quite a while when I was learning the game. :)

There is no effect of simply "using" a palantir. The player has the option to tap a given palantir for an effect if its bearer is able to use a palantir.

Rethinking The Low-HL Company

The orthodox doctrine for competitive decks has been the idea of the low Hazard Limit. Small company sizes combined with HL reducers to sidestep hazards. The prevalence of this philosophy was due in no small part to Josh Grace, who had an undefeated record in tournaments using such a strategy. Large...
