Ruse / Sojourn / More Sense Than You --> KILL?!

Another thing from the rules dust-up:
MELE Rules wrote:An attack by a hazard creature is defeated if it is not a detainment attack and all of its strikes directed against (i.e., assigned to) a company are defeated.
So if I play Ruse on a lone scout facing an attack, I defeat the attack?! According to the rule, I need merely defeat all assigned strikes. If there are 0 assigned strikes, I defeat all assigned strikes (I also fail to defeat all assigned strikes...); hence, I kill the creature?

This seems very very wrong....

Any thoughts?

Those cards says such and such can't be assigned a strike.

The quote says you must defeat the strikes assigned to the company.

Not assigning a strike to a character is not the same as defeating the strike.

OK, this one is done.
proposed ruling wrote:Although it may seem otherwise according to a literal-minded reading of the MELE rules ("An attack by a hazard creature is defeated if it is not a detainment attack and all of its strikes directed against (i.e., assigned to) a company are defeated."), you cannot defeat an attack by making all of its strikes un-assignable.
