First of all:
We would need a special rule that would say that avatar battles may only take place instead of company vs company battle, or an influence attemp!
ere an avatar battle card for Fallen wizards:
V - Name (FW CARD)
Permanent Event
Playble to iniciate an Avatar battle at a site against another wizard.
Each player makes a roll and adds his avatars prowless. +2 if untapped or a warrior (+4 if both).
If you loose: Discard this card and your avatar must make a body check.
If you win: Place this card with the opponents avatar at the nearest wizard haven (choose one if tied). He is taken Prisoner there.
Recue attack: Half-orcs 3@9 (and Maia 1@12 if your wizard is at the same site)
Wizard may also be recued by playing "Eagel Mounts" (resolves normaly) or may be bought into play by "The windlord found me.(old one is discarded).

I would connect avatar battle always to something special...
Killing your opponents avatar shouldn't be an option... or at least be very difficult...
it should always be some kind of disadvantage for you opponent if you succeed... but nothing that would make you loose the game imidietly...
maybe is there is a card that takes out ópponents avatar... make it like with secrifice of form... so he will not get the -5...
and a fallen wizard doesn't have to discard all his stage cards!!!!
