Isles of the Dead That Live

Isles of the Dead That Live wrote:Nearest Darkhaven: Geann a-Lisch Playable: Items (minor, major, gold ring) Automatic-attacks: Undead - 2 strikes with 8 prowess; each character wounded must make a corruption check modified by -2 Special: A covert company must tap an untapped character (if available) if this site is revealed as its new site.
All other minion sites located in coastal regions have special ability:
"An overt company must tap an untapped character (if available) if this site is revealed as its new site."

This symbolizes a fear felt by evil entities in contact with open water.

"A covert company must tap an untapped character (if available) if this site is revealed as its new site."
while able to function, seems to be a mistake.

I propose the following erratum:

"Nearest Darkhaven: Geann a-Lisch Playable: Items (minor, major, gold ring) Automatic-attacks: Undead - 2 strikes with 8 prowess; each character wounded must make a corruption check modified by -2 Special: An overt company must tap an untapped character (if available) if this site is revealed as its new site."
We will not speak of such things even in the morning of the Shire.

Hmpf

Interesting.

So you think this was just an "old school error" that was never found?

I would think not cause it doesn't have An covert, and says A covert. But all the AAs and similarities to the other 3 like this say overt.

You think this just needs errata?

That is the way Isle of the Dead that Live should be read (covert).
CoE 4 wrote:3. Minion Isles of the Dead That Live taps characters in covert company, while other similar cards tap characters in overt companies. Is that meant to be so or is there a mistake in the Isles of the Dead That Live card?
*** There is no errata on that card.
You probably aren't playing Agents correctly 8) <- need a rule thread for this tho...

We are still left wondering whether (A) the original text is the actual intention of the designers or (B) the card is going to be read this as printed because ICE has a policy of not issuing errata.

Typographical errors did receive errata when they had mechanical issues. But this is not the same as Redhorn "Gap" vs Redhorn "Gate", since "covert" companies are a thing that exists. So, I can see why this might not have been corrected even if it was a typographical error.

I don't see why Isles of the Dead would refer to "covert" companies instead of "overt" despite the ruling. But I am also not inclined to change it unless there is some abuse as a result of the typo.

I'm hesitant because we can't be entirely certain it wasn't deliberate.
Remember, NetRep rulings are official. This does not necessarily mean they are correct.

You probably aren't playing Fallen Wizards correctly. This prompted the backlash erratum that I will link to as soon as I notice it is officially posted. :)

Thematically, based on Tolkien, it‘s a holy place and no evil character should ever put a foot on it.

What's funny is that we can be ENTIRELY certain that Cave-drake should actually be a drake and not a dragon, as discussed in the newsgroup and in various ICE digests, but the CoE community still voted against the change. Ichabod states that it was not changed merely to not increase errata.

There was discussion in the Digests on Isles, but only about the printed text and not whether it was a mistake. But someone asked Ichabod outside of the Digests and he "theme murdered" this card.

Here's what I learned from the Middle-earth list:

"I asked Craig [former ICE netrep] about this a while ago - card text is
correct. Now it's not
clear if it's a goof up by ICE, but the explanation I got was along the
lines that the Isles of the Dead that Live is a taboo site for normal
people, so covert characters would have more trouble getting there
(finding a ship willing to transport them etc). Of course why the hero
site doesn't have the same restriction wasn't explained, unless the
reason is even deeper in Tolkien Lore (wasn't the Isles of the Dead linked
with Beren/Luthien?)."
