Cardnum Public Tournament Rankings

It is a bit silly to track rankings across tournaments when each has been a different format, but nevertheless I've been maintaining one. I figured I'd share with a mind to encourage players to set up impromptu "cold-call" games, if it helps to relate to others that might have had similar tournament experiences, or maybe just to set expectations of what they might be getting themselves into!

These numbers are based on the seasonal "Middle-earth CCG Official Ranking System by Chraig 'Ichabod' O'Brien, for I.C.E.", put in a code block below (up to 32 players). I've seen another version that is more like ELO, but this one makes a little more sense to me for the purpose of tracking for (hypothetical) event qualifications.

I'm showing the differences from 500 Ranking Points (RP) in the first two columns below, followed by individual tournament contributions. Without a regular yearly timeline, I replace Ichabod's 0.2x (or 0x for negatives) multipliers per season with a "decayed" RP calculation. After each tournament, I add the points of that tournament to the ranking points from after the previous tournament reduced by a fraction for each month that elapsed between. With our sparser schedule, I use a 4 year rather than 1 year timescale, so 0.2x (or 0.01x for negative sums) for every 48 months.

If I missed collapsing someone's real name and forum, discord, or cardnum username, let me know.

Middle-earth CCG Official Ranking System

by Chraig 'Ichabod' O'Brien, for I.C.E.

The System
Winning / losing
Each win gives a player +1 ranking point (RP), each loss -1 RP
No ranking points are won or lost on draws or byes

The pool
At the start of the tournament each player donates 10 ranking points to the pool.

At the end of the tournament the points in the pool are distributed according to the table at the next sheet, based on each players final standing

All final standings are important, so try to break all ties using the tie braking rules

Dropouts do not get ranking points from the pool (as they do not achieve a final standing); this may cause some RP's to be lost (not redistributed)

First ranking
The first time a player is ranked he / she starts with 500 points, plus 20% of his / her points over 500 (if any) in the final ranking of the previous season

Only points over 500 are taken into account, a player never starts a season at less than 500 points

After the first ranking the changes in RP's are added to the players previous RP total

Examples
Alex played in a 15 player tournament and ended up 2nd with 3 wins and one loss. His previous ranking is 521. His new ranking is: 521 + 3 - 1 - 10 + 24 = 537 (previous ranking + wins - losses -10 RP's for the pool + 24 RP's for 2nd place in a 15 player tournament (from the table) = 537)

Eve played in a 23 player tournament, she won twice and lost twice and ended up in 14th place. She has not been ranked yet this season. Last season her final ranking was 486. Her new ranking is: 500 + 2 - 2 - 10 + 10 = 500

Phil played in a 10 player tournament. He won the first round but lost the second and dropped out after that. His previous ranking is 495. His new ranking: 495 + 1 - 1 - 10 + 0 = 485

Note that Phil does not get a final standing and therefore no RP's from the pool, even though he might have more tournament points then the players ending in 8th and 9th place. Phil may have dropped out, but the tournament is still ranked as a ten player tournament

Olivia played in a 26 player tournament, she won three times, lost twice and ended up in 5th place. She has not yet been ranked this season. Her final ranking last season was 526. Her new ranking: 500 + 5 + 3 - 2 - 10 + 16 = 512

I should be half way in this ranking just for having organised one such tournament! Just joking but still why am I at the very bottom here? I didn't finish last in the last sealed and METW-only events. More like half way and nearly last.

I stuck a code block with the ranking system above (shortened to 32 max players... I'd love to expand it though!).

Short version: participants get -10 for entering an event which are put in a pool, get +1 or -1 for each game won or lost, and get points back from the pool based on how they placed. In general, the top placement get a big bonus, and the last square root or so of players get almost nothing from the pool. Players that drop out get nothing back from the pool; this is the repayment for your kindness in keeping the numbers even this last event. :|

Nice idea, Theo, to revive this ICE era tournament ranking system.

re: drop outs. I think the system is right in not rewarding people who drop out. In case of somebody being so kind to drop out just to keep numbers even the system should be reassessed, though.

Updated with results of METD tournament.

Changed to sorting principally by a weighted sum of tournament contributions to simulate the seasonal decay in Ichabod's description. This has the effect of making contributions worth 0.2x for every 7 tournaments that happened more recently while maintaining a positive sum, or less than 0.01 while maintaining a negative sum.

I updated the rankings with the All-Expansion Sealed Collection tournament from the summer.

I (yet again) changed the principal sorting to use a month timescale rather than tournament timescale, details above. They feel pretty equivalent to me, but I figured this would be more sensitive to skills being developed (or stagnating) outside of tournament play, which I would hope (regret) is occurring!

As I continue to gather more data, I become increasingly skeptical of the appropriateness of using this for things like qualifying for hypothetical special events. I can see how this being implemented among independent regions for the purpose of culling the best of each region would be sensible, but when these events are already open to players regardless of region I think the high skew of points toward the top places doesn't allow for proper distinguishing among the rest. So I'll be going back and trying another idea when I have a moment, essentially based on TP standard deviations. (I haven't yet chosen how to handle players that drop out.) Or send any ideas my way.
