Does "re-check" of Foul Fumes start a chain of effect?

Hello,
Question for NetRep,
Company with a ranger moves to a site with 2 Wilderness its site path.
The resource player only has "Master of Wood, Water, or Hill" at his disposal.
DoN is in play.
Foul Fumes is played and resolves without effect. Foul Fumes checks for the first time. Is the "site path check" part of the effect?
Choking Shadow is played on a Wilderness changing one wilderness to shadow land. Is the particular wilderness decided at play time or when it resolves?
If it is decided at play time, Choking shadow can easily fizzle by playing "Master of Wood, Water, or Hill" in response.
If it is decided when resolving, is the following legal?
Choking Shadow resolves. Foul Fumes does a "re-check". Does this re-check start a new chain of effect so Master of Wood Water or Hill may modify the land and fizzle Foul Fumes "re-check" effect?
Thank you.
