Printing your own cards

Post by Padster » Thu Jun 07, 2018 8:37 pm

Has anyone tried to fill in the gaps in their sets, but using the card images available to have cards professionally printed?

Cheers

This topic has been discussed elsewhere in the forum and the practice is highly discouraged, for good reason.

If you are looking to make a proxy, however, it should be done in a manner which is obvious to others that the card is not authentic. It would be devastating for professionally printed fakes to end up on eBay and be purchased by new players who can't really tell the difference.

It would help new players to be able to purchase a play-set...
Perhaps if any new prints had a symbol on them to tell the difference. I would be all for awesome looking proxy cards for play, as long as you could tell them apart for collectors.

Perhaps a bright, lime-green border or something? That way the card could be unobstructed by watermarks or anything of the sort, but it would still be especially clear that they weren't originals.

I will admit that I have been spending a sizable amount of time remastering every card in Photoshop and MSE (after some extensive time fixing the MSE template and correcting fonts in it) to provide for printable proxies to preserve the game. Personally - I have opted to use the Black Border on all the proxies I produce, but with the copyright line changed to read "Proxy - (C) 1995 - 1998 Tolkien Enterprises". I've redone the 2 player starter into a print and cut at home PDF. I've also had some cards printed up, but I used Grayscale versions of the original card backs. That way it is beyond clear that they are proxies only.

I don't encourage anyone to fake cards or allow for misrepresentation of proxies. Personally my goals are just to make sure folks can print out some cards at home and still play - despite issues with product availability. More of a long game viewpoint.
