I did a search on Lotro (Lord of the Rings Online), but it gave me no results. Has this MMORPG been discussed here? Is anyone active in it? Is it worth the money?

Why am I asking? I partook in the beta (on a very casual level: didn't level over lvl18), then didn't bother to subscribe as the game was released. Last september I reactivated my old account for a month (cost me 12 euros), had a bit of fun yet somehow the game didn't convince me to cough up another 12 euros for the next month. Still the game keeps appealling to me... As does World of Warcraft, but at least that game can be played casually on private servers - which is technically illegal, so I wouldn't know anything about that ;)

Can anyone convince me to resubscribe to Lotro?

Probably not here; this is for the Middle Earth Collectible Card Game that was published by Iron Crown Enterprises. Give it a try, though, there's a free online gameplaying program called GCCG (see the GCCG subforum for details)!

Haha :D
I know that! I've been playing MECCG since last september. I even went to the last Lure :D

But... seeing as we're all Lord of the Rings-fans here, I figured someone must've tried Lotro...?

I'm heavily addicted to LOTRO, but as it's an addiction I cannot tell you a reason to join :)

The huge addictive power should be a good reason NOT to join, shoudn't it?

Btw, I never played LOTRO, just saw some screenshot on the Internet. I'm pretty scared of MMORPGs, then I try to stay away from them... :P

You know, I have never really had the patience to stick around long enough in a MMORPG to do any of the things that supposedly make this kind of game worthwile ('raiding' or whatever that is for instance). It takes such a long time to gain higher levels and you have to go through so much boring stuff ("kill 6 wolves", "now kill 12 wolves", "now kill 8 bears and bring me 6 boar-tusks" etc. etc.).

So where does one find the inspiration to go through all this?? What makes a game like LOTRO fun after gaining lets say level 20?

I'm an ex-pat of MECCG/GCCG and what took me away was LOTRO. After playing heavily and steadily for about 1.5 yrs I'm considering coming back to GCCG, though I need to re-download the client.

The reason for trying LOTRO over MECCG is rather complex but the basic motivating factor was that I wanted to have another immersion experience of Tolkien worlds.

Before LOTRO I would argue that MECCG, outside of something straight up RP like MERP, was the BEST Middle-earth *immersion* gaming experience I've ever had. BTW, I own all the Knizia LotR board games too but finding 4-5 warm bodies to play that regularly is no easy feat.

I have a lifetime membership and I can tell you that I got ever bang for every dollar and day I spent playing. Yes, it is addictive but only slightly more than MECCG was to me before. And in some ways less expensive. My MECCG collection cost about a thousand dollars, though GCCG is FREE, and LOTRO has cost me, NOT counting the computer upgrade, which was required, about $400.

Besides the amazingly rendered world, think the MECCG map come to life--imagine going to Hollin or to Bree for real and not just on the map!-- the game is *cooperative* (save PvP which is still cooperative P v Minion players) not competitive. Nobody loses and the fun is had in playing w/ usually up to 6 other players and elegantly meeting the quest and deed objectives, not to mention crafting. Anyway, it is a social mileu, w/ all the pluses and minuses that come w/ that.

Yes, there is a grind element, but building decks is a grind IMHO as well.

Well I could discourse on and on, but I'd say that the game is pretty satisfying, especially if you can bring/find/make friends to play with and love Tolkien w/ all you heart, mind, and soul. That should be enough.
