Hello,
The game length for a 2 deck game was 80 mn.
In the last COE Official Tournament Policies, it is now 90 mn.
What are the reasons for this change?

Hi, and thanks for the question. We discussed the round times extensively, especially for online play, but there were a couple of reasons that we landed on 90 minutes being an appropriate length for 2-deck rounds during an in-person tournament, based on a lot more data than was available when the Council of Lorien rules were initially written decades ago:
1) Since games tend to be cut short anyway, adding an additional 10 minutes to the round time allows the game to progress slightly more toward a true winner, reducing variance to a small degree.
2) There's often not enough time to wrap up turns in just 10 minutes if a tournament organizer is trying to schedule out the day and only allotting an hour and a half between each match. Allowing for 90-minute rounds, with new matches presumably starting at the top of the next hour on the 2-hour mark, facilitates scheduling for the organizer as well as comprehension for players when they are planning travel arrangements after the tournament or just running to the restroom in between matches or whatever the case may be.
With that said, if sanctioned tournament organizers report back that 90-minute rounds have become problematic in a real world sense (or there are other unforeseen issues with the CoE tournament policies), then I believe that the CoE is open to reevaluating in the future. These are just the tournament policies as of today.
