[Report] Lord Balin retakes Erebor while Lady Galadriel takes a Long Good Walk Into the Smoking Cone

I played my first in-person Dream Card match recently. I played Lord Balin and a friend played Lady Galadriel. We both played 80 card decks. The game took about 6 hours! Though we did spend plenty of time reviewing the DC rules and the Players Guide. Mistakes were made here and there. That was no big deal though as we were just trying to have a fun Dream Card experience. It was a blast! My most epic adventure.

Lord Balin retakes Erebor while Lady Galadriel takes a Long Good Walk Into the Smoking Cone

--------------------------------------------------
Summary

Thorin and company recruit Bilbo at Bag End. They travel to The Lonely Mountain, collecting various hoarded treasures. Despite 10 unique dragon attacks (5 from Smaug alone) and 15 body checks, most of the company (except Thorin, Fili, and Kili) survives to play Return to Old Dwellings and Kingdom of Old Restored. 33MP

Galadriel takes A Long Good Walk with Tom Bombadil and Treebeard before Raiding Towers at Mt Doom and going Into the Smoking Cone. (Notes on Galadriel's deck are summarized.) 38MP

A snapshot during the Day of Reckoning:
Image

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Start

Thorin meets with Kili, Fili, Gloin, and Dwalin at the Blue Mountain Dwarf-hold. Thorin tells them of Durin's Day and explains how Gandalf told him that there is More than Meets the Eye with Hobbits. In preparation for their adventure, Kili packs his Pipe, Gloin grabs his Shield of Iron-bound Ash, and Dwalin readies his Bow of Yew.

Image

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Start

Elrond meets with Celedhring and Orophin at Lorien, the realm of Lady Galadriel, a Lady of Many Gifts. While the company already carries Possessions of the High-elves, they seek adventure having heard Rumours of Rings. In preparation, Celedhring wears his ring, Maranya, and Orophin carries a Star-glass.

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 1

Lord Balin joins the company at Blue Mountain Dwarf-hold. Balin hears rumors of Bilbo, Dragon-lore, An Unexpected Party, and Carc.

Balin and company depart from the Blue Mountain Dwarf-hold and make their way towards Bag End. From the Long Dark Reach of Sauron, Ren the Unclean attacks Balin's company. Fili defends the strike against Ren the Unclean. Kili and Gloin support Fili while Dwalin covers Fili with the Bow of Yew. Ren the Unclean's strike fails but he is not defeated. Meanwhile, Itangast at Home is Summoned from Long Sleep. Balin's company arrives at Bag End unharmed.

Image

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 1

Celebrían, Galadriel's Trusted Counsellor, arrives in Lorien and joins the company. They hear Rumours of a Magic Ring of Nature. The company pulls an Elf-stone out from among their High-elven Possessions.

Elrond travels alone to Framsburg from Lorien. Meanwhile, Gollum - My Precious, arrives with Inner Cunning. [[My Precious can travel to free-hold Rivendell?]]

Elrond makes it to Framsburg safely and discovers an Emerald of Doriath.

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 2

Bilbo joins the company of dwarves with some convincing by Fili, Kili, Balin and Dwalin. There really is More than Meets the Eye with Hobbits. Despite the exhaustion of convincing Bilbo, the dwarves realize We Must Away (only 1 copy in the 80 card deck) and they are refreshed and begin their journey.

Thorin's company, including Bilbo, being their long road to Erebor, resting at Weathertop. What they didn't realize is that a Dragon's Desolation lies on Weathertop and a Cave-drake attacks Kili and Bilbo. Dwalin covers for Bilbo with his Bow of Yew, but Kili and Bilbo are both wounded but live. But that isn't all. Agburanar has spotted the company and he attacks Gloin and Dwalin (1st unique dragon attack of many). Gloin and Dwalin are wounded by the attack but live. By the curse of Indur Dawndeath, Dwalin loses his Bow of Yew. Still, they all arrive in Weathertop alive. (4 body checks so far).

Thorin and Balin easily clear the wolves from Weathertop, where Balin speaks of Dragon-lore, which hardly seems historical, dubious, or mythical after the recent dragon attacks. Thorin reveals Thror's Map and they discuss plans to retake Erebor.

Image Image

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 2

Rumil arrives in Lorien and joins the company.

Elrond leaves Framsburg and travels to Rivendell. He encounters some pestering Dwarven Travelers and Durin's Folk. But they can't detain him.

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 3

Thorin's company takes the High Pass and comes into the Anduin Vales, headed towards Beorn's House. The company arrives safely but are still wounded from the previous Dragon attacks.

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 3

Lady Galadriel joins her companions at Lorien. Galadriel gifts Elrond with Three Golden Hairs and the Phial of Galadriel. The company hears Rumours of the Dwarven Ring of Durin's Tribe.

Elrond and Celebrian travel from Lorien to Rivendell. Dwarven Travelers waylay Celebrian. Then a King Spider attacks them, but they defeat the spider.

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 4

Thorin's company leaves Beorn's House, travels through the Woodland Realm to see their cousins at the Iron Hills Dwarf-hold. Uvatha the Horseman sends a Cave-drake to attack Balin and Thorin, who are wounded. (Note: 7 body checks so far and no deaths. So, I think there were actually 2 Cave-drake attacks this turn?). The whole company is wounded but they make it to the Iron Hills Dwarf-hold.

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 4

Elrond and Celebrian stay at Rivendell and Galadriel's company stays at Lorien.

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 5

Finally, everyone in Thorin's company is healed and ready after resting at the Iron Hills Dwarf-hold. Balin dons his Crimson Hood and Thorin recounts the origin of Oakenshield.

Thorin's company travels from the Iron Hills to Ovir Hollow in the Grey Mountain Narrows in search of hoarded treasure. Ovir Hollow is also plagued by a Dragon's Desolation and the company is attacked by Itangast, Summoned from his Long Sleep. (2nd unique dragon attack).

Fili, Kili, and Gloin are wounded by Itangast and Fili dies. (10 body checks? 1st death).

[[Question - can you play dragons desolation twice on the same company?]]

Bilbo burgles Ovir Hollow (optional ICE rule) and finds Durin's Axe.

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 5

Elrond and Celebrian travel back to Lorien. However, there is always the Chance of Being Lost and they end up at Dunharrow.

Galadriel's company stays at Lorien. They obtained more elven trinkets.

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 6

The company heads back to the Iron Hills uneventfully.

Thorin recruits the Iron Hills Dwarves to their cause.

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 6

Elrond's company finds their way from Dunharrow to Lorien to meet with Galadriel's company.

The elves craft a Leaf Brooch but they are struck by Greed. However, they all pass the test. Meanwhile, Orophin makes an Elven Rope.

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 7

Balin leaves No Mouse Unnoticed.

The company of Dwarves is finally prepared to travel to The Lonely Mountain to retake Erebor. Unfortunately, it is also affected by a Dragon's Desolation. Scatha attacks the dwarves. (3rd unique dragon attack). However, the dwarves are tipped off to Scatha's attack by an Old Thrush and suddenly The Dwarves are Upon Scatha. Scatha's attacks fail but he is not defeated. Wearily, the company arrives at The Lonely Mountain.

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 7

Elrond travels to the Bandit Lair. Galadriel's company stays at Lorien.

Elrond fends off the bandits and he finds A Beautiful Gold Ring.

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 8

Even though Smaug is at Home, the Dwarves strengthen their Clan Bonds and they prepare to retake The Lonely Mountain.

A Cave-drake attacks Thorin and Bilbo. Thorin defends Bilbo with his Oakenshield and he defeats the Drake.

A second cave drake attacks Bilbo and Balin. The Drake is strengthened by double Prowess of Age. Balin's defense is supported by Dwalin and Kili and he successfully repeals the attack. However, poor Bilbo is wounded, though he survives. After these attacks, the company decides to wait on the doorstep.

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 8

Aegnor arrives at Lorien.

Elrond travels back to Lorien.

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 9

Dain arrives at the Iron Mountain Dwarf-hold.

Thorin and company travel from The Lonely Mountain to the Dead Marshes. They defeat the undead and find Wormsbane.

Image

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 9

At Lorien, the elves test rings and discover a Magic Ring of Nature and the Dwarven Ring of Durin's Tribe. Celeborn meets with the company.

Celeborn, Galadriel, and Aegnor travel to Tom's House in The Old Forest. They are waylaid by Durin's Folk. Galadriel has A Long Good Talk with Tom Bombadil.

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 10

Bofur joins Dain at the Iron Hills Dwarf-hold.

Thorin and company travel from the Dead Marshes back to the Lonely Mountain. Yet again, it is Desolated and Leucaruth attacks by a Long Dark Reach (we later decided that Long Dark Reach doesn't work without Doors?). (4th unique dragon attack). Thorin defended Leucaruth's attacks with Oakenshield and Wormsbane struck a death blow, defeating Leucaruth. (1MP).

Dain traveled to The Lonely Mountain to join Thorin. Sauron's Long Dark Reach was not long enough. (I later realized that DF Dain is a leader and I should use regular Dain).

Thorin's company enters the Lonely Mountain. Gloin defends against the dragon with Durin's Axe and his Ash Shield. Balin Conceals the company from Smaug At Home (5th unique dragon attack). Dwalin discovers an Enruned Shield. Bilbo uses Thror's Map to help Balin discover the Emerald of the Mariner (untapped with Avatar). Bofur finds Carc (from the discard) which enables Dain to convince the Ravens of Northern Rhovanian to join their cause.

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 10

Galadriel's company travels from the Old Forest to Wellinghall in Fangorn. However, they encounter Shifting Paths which interferes with their Long Good Talk. (I accidentally discovered the killer of Long Good Talks. However, we decide to just cancel this hazard as it would ruin the game. Note that Tom is a Maia and The Old Forest is a new [-me_wi-] region in DC.). The company is also waylaid by Durin's Folk and Dwarven Travelers.

Galadriel and Tom Bombadil meet with Treebeard, concluding their Long Good Talk.

Image Image

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 11

Dain becomes a Trusted Councilor of Balin and Thorin.

The dwarves company stays at The Lonely Mountain despite Smaug being At Home.

No Mouse is Unnoticed. And certainly Smaug on guard is Noticed! Still, the dwarves must press on to retake Erebor. Dwalin defends against the first dragon attack and he is wounded. As it happens, Smaug at Home (6th attack?) was a Marvel Told but Smaug was on guard (7th unique dragon attack). Bilbo and Balin defend Smaug and are wounded but survive. But now the dwarves are Out of the Frying Pan and into the Fire. Three more dragons attack the company as they Return to their Old Dwellings (3 strikes at 16 + creature Smaug attacks again).

Dain blocks the first dragon attack with his Enruned Shield. Gloin and Thorin also defend the two following drain attacks. But now Smaug is back to attack Dain and Kili (8th unique dragon attack, created by Returned to Old Dewllings). Thorin uses Oakenshield to defend Dain. Kili is wounded by the but lives (14th body check?). Dain (untapped) completed their Return to Old Dwellings. (1MP).

Image

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 11

Galadriel's company travels back to Lorien. They experience Dark Days (dwarves cvcc elves). However, it is but a Marvel Told. (Galadriel cycles her deck).

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 12

Thorin and company stay at The Lonely Mountain.

Their company is Revealed to all Watchers and a Cave Drake attacks Bofur and Carc. Then Itangast attacks the company and Nori, Dain, and Thorin defend the attack (9th unique dragon attack). Nori and Thorin are wounded but survive. Dain defends the attack with the Enruned Shield and is unscathed.

Balin Notices another Mouse that looks like Smaug. Still, the company must retake Erebor! Gloin defends the first attack with Durin's Axe. Smaug attacks Dain and Balin (10th unique dragon attack). Thorin uses Oakenshield to defend Balin. Dain successfully defends again Smaug (rolls a 12). However, Wormsbane fails Thorin and he is mortally wounded by Smaug (15th body check?). Despite the death of their king, the dwarves establish a Mining Settlement at the Lonely Mountain, which also becomes their Kingdom of Old Restored.

For some reason, Kili abandons the company and travels to the Easterling Camp. Sadly, Kili is mortally wounded by a Cave Drake and his Long Dark Reach. (16th body check) (Balin cycles his deck).

Image Image

--------------------------------------------------
Lady Galadriel - Turn 12

All of the elves are at Lorien. They travel to the Easterling Camp to meet the Master of (Esgaroth) the Easterling Camp. Marvel's are Told of Galadriel's Lure of Nature. Immediately after arriving at the Easterling Camp, the company heads for Mount Doom (7 regions from Lorien in DC). (We realized later that this is My Precious's home site).

The elves go Into The Smoking Cone with their Ancient Knowledge. By the powers of Tom and Treebeard's Long Good Talk, Galadriel's makes her venture Into The Smoking Cone her Greatest Achievements as they are now Safe From The Shadow. (Galadriel prepares for her Day of Reckoning). (Note that Galadriel can store Into the Smoking Cone due to A Long Good Talk, which would have been discarded by Shifting Paths).

--------------------------------------------------
Lord Balin - Turn 13

Balin and Dain's company pile all of their hoard goodies into a Hoard Gathering.

The company travels to Irerock and is attacked by Indur Dawndeath from Sauron's Long Dark Reach. Carc defends the attack and flies away.

Bilbo defends the dragon attack at Irerock with Halfling Stealth. Balin discovers the Arkenstone. (I forgot about the DC rule that would have let me play the King Under the Mountain and Returned Exiles at Irerock for having defeated creature Leucaruth).

Image

--------------------------------------------------
The Day of Reckoning

Everyone passes the test at their Day of Reckoning.

Balin has 33MP.

Galadriel has 38MP.

so question on the play:
Itangast at Home is Summoned from Long Sleep
cannot be reserved with Summons as it is a perm, maybe it is just a weird way of saying both entered play
Elrond makes it to Framsburg safely and discovers an Emerald of Doriath
drawn from deck, or using Cup of Farewell with Galadriel?
the dwarves realize We Must Away (only 1 copy in the 80 card deck) and they are refreshed and begin their journey.
Thorin's company, including Bilbo, being their long road to Erebor, resting at Weathertop
was confused here, you got all untapped to move 2 regions (and a ruins even, better should have gone to Rivendell then stage version to play Info) or The Carrock so at least the next movement would be easier
Question - can you play dragons desolation twice on the same company?
sure why not,

most useful counter is either Dragon-feuds (with protect what you play) or Flatter a Foe to reduce the hazardlimit also 2 THE Old Trush straight in seems good idea ;)
A Merrier World & Promise of Treasure
is must have for your deck to maximise your points (from creatures & Returned)
I accidentally discovered the killer of Long Good Talks.
so how is that accidental, as it is by design ;) everybody knows one gets lost deep in conversation in the woods without a handful of rangers or a Twilight at the ready ;)
(I forgot about the DC rule that would have let me play the King Under the Mountain and Returned Exiles at Irerock for having defeated creature Leucaruth).
yeah that one is must remember for sure

yours Nicolai

thanks for your tips and comments!

Sadly, I forgot everything that wasn't in my notes. It was a blur! But thanks for reminding me of Rivendell and the Carrock. Rivendell (free information!!) and the Carrock are now top of my picks for Dragon-Lore.

Truth told, I left my full site deck at home. Luckily I had pulled out the DF Havens and a handful of other sites for 3 decks.

I forget about Itangast, maybe he was summoned as creature (he definitely was ok summons at some point) and also played as At Home.

I have Flatter a Foe in a different Gandalf deck as he has so much DI and is a diplomat - he can do it easily. But the Dwarves aren't too good at flattery. So I didn't add it.

I think I have only 1 Old Thrush, but maybe 2. Ill have to wrote down my deck list.

I read that with one copy in the deck, it is unlikly to be drawn to move over the Misty Mountains to reach The Carrock
or the The Wind Throne for Information out of Blue MDH. Son of Thrain can allow you to start with Thror's Map
and later fetch Master of Esgaroth. I like to use MoE from Blue MDH to reach Ligr Wodaize Berne then move to Withered Hearth.
Nothing but Wilderness - Ford anyone? But Dragon Desolation provides a fright when you clear regions only to reach "home"
with a dragon in waiting. Thank goodness agents can not make playable unique creatures.

Good tips. I am not familiar enough with DC it seems.

You are right though, with strictly region movement The Iron Hills are a world apart from The Blue Mountains. I need to make better use of movement enhancers in the beginning. However, I wanted to start with the More Than Meets the Eye stage card, which, at 2SP is really limiting. If I wanted to make a more competitive deck I would really start with Balin, DoAllTrades, Son of Fundin, and Durin's Day.

I like Thorin but I am not a big fan of his stage cards. I like Balins stage cards the most. Probably this was intentional as he is the weakest Dwarf Lord.

Thrain getting unlimited item MP is the next idea floating around my head. Reconquest of Khazad Dum is also enticing. Is there a Glamdring+Wormsbane enhancer in DC? -2 body to Balrogs

After reading the notes again:

Not at Home seems like a good event instead of Dragon Feuds - deal with Dragon at Homes
and those keyed to the site including Dragon Desolation right or Rumour or Wealth?

An odd option to move eastward: Blue MDH to Isildur's Tomb four regions away to play Information.
Then move four regions to Lorien again for Information or use We Must Away to reach Rhosgobel to heal.
Now, more to Iron Hills. Elven Rope any good to start?

I think Long Dark Reach does not need Doors of Night, but of course if you want to use a Dragon creature
keyed to a region in the card text.

Great read again. I have trouble getting 11 MPs in 11 turns.

Long Dark Reach wrote: Playable on a moving company with at least one wilderness in its site path if you have at least 10 cards in your play deck. Reveal the top seven cards of your play deck. One revealed Nazgûl, Dragon, or a non-unique creature (your choice) immediately attacks the company (regardless of its playability requirements). The creature must be be playable in a region besides coastal seas. If the creature could not normally be played on the company, modify its prowess by -4. Shuffle all unused cards and return them to the top of your play deck.
We got hung up on the part saying "The creature must be be playable in a region besides coastal seas." Of course, Dragons are possibly playable keyed to certain regions (eg withered heath).

However, Smaug for example is "normally" only playable keyed to a site and is not "normally" playable keyed to regions, but may be keyed to regions if Doors of Night is in play. Now, Long Dark Reach does not mention "normally", which probably indicates the intention. But in the heat of the moment we questioned ourselves. We ended up playing Long Dark Reach both ways! ... This might be similar to the issue of whether Dunledings or Pukel Men can be played at Framsburg. But Framsburg does use the "normally" language!

So, I think you are right about Long Dark Reach.

I'll post my deck list next week.

I think we need some sages here. Let me add some with Long Dark Reach.
The NetRep ruling has it that Doors of Night must be in play to play a unique Dragon creature, since the creature's text
mentions regions it can be keyed.

I do not recall if "normally" was ever defined. For me it means not needing another card. Thus normal is what is on its card text.
Now, Smaug needs Doors of Night to be keyed to Withered Hearth, but not "to be" keyed to Withered Hearth. Bilbo is not normally
playable at Weathertop, but A Chance Meeting allows it.

Now for a debate that I have lost everytime on this forum; using a bit of story logic as it is written in the Long Expected Module MECCG guide:
Use the book as a reference. Smaug can reach Arthedain when Doors of Night is in play using Long Dark Reach, because the creature is "reaching" from its current region of influence. That is you have to be out of the box already to travel or be influenced by Sauron. Nameless Thing does not cut it. IMHO.

However, I think you were smart to play both ways to gauge the hazard. That is what the game is about -testing to find flaws to make the game better all around. If I would play a novice player, then I would let that player's intuition guide his own play even though it may be wrong, yes I would tell him, but allow the play so we can learn its affects causing us to be more in turn with the game mechanics were doing something correct.

Very nice report!
Just for having (only) Thorin, Fili and Kili killed in the retaking of Erebor it deserves a place in the DC Hall of Fame. 8)
And going for Return to Old Dwellings at The Lonely Mountain while opponent plays Dragon hazards, that definitely takes guts.

You have a pretty good grasp on many DC cards and rules. As Vastor rightly points out, playing We Must Away and then moving only 2 regions to Weathertop, on a quest to Dragon country, that seems a pity. In any case, overlooking some of the many new abilities DC cards offer is very common, it happens regularly even to the designers, and just makes us keep playing more games

I also note (once more) that detainment hazards, while they can work in shorter games (tournaments) where losing 1 turn makes the difference, in longer games they do not have much effect. Did you play He Is Lost to Us?

Yeah, my opponent thought it very fitting that only Thorin, Fili, and Kili met their ends. And, I was trying my best to play Return at The Lonely Mountain, despite Smaug at Home. But then the creature guards were just too much. I got lucky drawing wormsbane and so I picked that up at The Dead Marshes. Oakenshield is also powerful against 2 strike dragons. So then I was able to go back and succeed. Funny how the Dwarf-lords have to live with their pet dragons, which then cancel their mining settlement haven status if they enter the site again.

I realize that I need to get more characters into play. So, maybe I'll add another clan bonds and more mining settlements, or Lock Nor Bar / a chance meeting. Carc has told of a way to play a "free" item each turn at Erebor, but that seems to be more of a 3-deck game strategy.

I will need to work on this deck more. Honestly, the hazard section is fairly half-baked, and even worse because I was rushing for the meet the next day.

I tried a deck with Arda Angered, Hurling Rocks, and giants. And also the new and old dwarf hazards. But you really need someone to be travelling in Anduin Vales to get the surprise giants I was hoping for. I'd still like to make that work, but I moved away from this event strategy and was using the detainment dwarfs for tapping and then Giants along with Bert, Tom, and Will to hopefully get some body-checks. But it didn't work out for me in this game. Though, funny how 1 lucky hazard play can win you the game when 39 others fail.

I finally dug this deck out and wrote up the deck list. I believe this is accurate, but there was a lot of sideboard usage that mixed up my deck. And maybe some changes based on what I would do now (like start Oin). I have plenty more changes to make. Especially to the hazards, which were just thrown together at 11PM.

For hazards, I'd add the giants back in to make sure of the tapping dwarves. And use 3 rivers. Thw dwarven warparty wasn't very useful this game.

There are a lot of changes that would make the resource portion better, but I'm not willing to do that. Starting Balin, Dwarf of All Trades would be very helpful. But here I learned of more information sites to use Dragon-lore, which helps pull out the hoard items I need for Hoard Gathering (my big non-item MP)...

Many of the SB cards are dumped to the discard and then recycled into the deck or hand via various DC effects.

Thanks for the decklist!
I suppose the bolded cards are ones that you retrieve via the discard pile? (perhaps mention that in the post).

You could also post this in the deck section, with a link to this post for the report...

Yes Dwarven Hazards have a blind spot in Mordor (and a bit in Gondor). Staying true to the theme of your resource portion, perhaps kick a few Ash-drakes in the sideboard then?
