I did a search for this issue and found partial answers, but I still wasn't clear on some of the details:

I'm trying to figure out the specific conditions I need for playing a ring (doesn't have to be the One Ring and, in fact, I'm looking for just a regular magic ring for my purposes). From what I understand, the following are two main methods as I understand them:

1) I need a ring of some sort and a card to test it. Location does not matter and playing a ring does not count for purposes of tapping the site.

2) I need a ring of some sort and a site which allows for a ring to be played. I've always been a bit vague on what advantage this is and how it works. I've seen sites that allow you to play a gold ring... does that mean that, even w/o a card to test it, I can just whip out any gold ring card then roll to see what kind of a ring I get? In this case, I assume the site is tapped b/c it's a special site that allows you to play a gold ring as if it were an item.

The play of Ring Special Items generally requires:

1: A Gold Ring Item, and;
2: Fulfilling the conditions of a Ring Test card.

Play of a Ring Special Item as the result of a successful ring test does not tap the site and only requires a specific site if mentioned on the test card in question (e.g. Secrets Of Their Forging, Ringlore).
The game is flawed, but this does not mean it cannot be loved.

Items fall into several categories, minor, major, great, special, ring, etc.

In the most simple terms you do it like this.

Goto Site A and play a Gold Ring (Precious, Beautiful, etc) Item.

At anytime you can legally play a test you can test the gold ring item

You then discard the gold ring item and may choose to play a special ring based upon the test used, roll, card says specifically, etc. The special ring item comes from your hand normally but Rumors of rings or whatever it's called allows you to play it from there instead.

Again this is a basic example

Thank you both for your help.

I'm sorry if I seem a bit slow, but basically the two methods are to go to a site where a gold ring is playable, play the gold ring by rolling for what kind of a ring it is and you're done (site does not tap) or to use a 'test' card at any site to test a gold ring (of whatever kind), roll for type of ring (site does not tap).

I understand that characters like Gandalf can test a ring at any time and there are other conditions that don't meet the above, but I'm hoping i have the basic gist.

This must seem like a horribly basic question that I'm making far more complicated than necessary, but I've never used rings in any of my decks and I want to be totally clear so I have no missteps when I play it in game.

Actually, no.

Rings and ring tests are a complicated part of the game because they don't follow standard item play as such.

Gold Ring Items represent an unknown ring -- it could be The One Ring or it could just be a Magic Ring of Stealth that Bilbo's got. They are noted as "Gold Ring Item" on the right below the picture.

These are the items that are playable at a site that states Gold Ring items are playable.

Ring Special Items are played after the test of the Gold Ring Item. They are not noted as a Gold Ring Item on the right below the picture; they are noted as a Special Item.

The gist is:
Gold Ring Items are the ones played at sites and will tap the site.
Ring Special Items are the ones that are played after the ring test and do not tap a site.
You may only test Gold Ring Items.
The game is flawed, but this does not mean it cannot be loved.

Argh, I think I get it now.

So, in a basic way, to play a ring, you have to go to a site where a gold ring can be played, ie, Bandit Lair, Gladden Fields, etc. Once there, you can play your gold ring which taps the site like any item played at a site would under normal circumstances. Then, to determine what kind of a ring it is, you play some kind of a testing card whenever the player is inclined or gets the card in hand and (in this case, the advantage of Gandalf is that you don't need a testing card b/c that's his innate ability) you roll. Whatever ring it's determined to be does not tap the site since determining what type of ring the gold ring is is not the same as playing the item.

I hope I've finally got this right...
